MEDIA STATEMENT GOVERNMENT NOTES THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY MULTICHOICE Government notes the announcement made by Multichoice to remove Africa News Network 7 channel from the DSTV bouquet when the contract expires in August 2018. As previously stated, Communications Minister Kubayi-Ngubane reiterates that government will not get involved on contractual matters between two private parties. “I wish to express my disappointment that the viewers of DSTV will not have access to the diversity of voices that ANN7 has also contributed to the country’s media landscape. However there is a lesson to be learned going forward in that, as government we need to look at how our current policies are structured in relation to increasing diversity of media ownership” said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane. On the same note, government is pleased on the progressive move by Multichoice to find a new black owned news channel to represent majority of people in South Africa. “It is imperative to ensure that there is diversity of media ownership bringing new and fresh perspective to the people of South Africa” said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane

Mana: The judiciary says it is has digitalized 40 per cent of all legal cases tried in the country’s courts. The case management system is an ongoing innovation being implemented by the judiciary to bring efficiency in the administration of cases with a view to improve service delivery. It was introduced in 2016. Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency on Wednesday, Project Coordinator for Case Management System, Justice Dunstan Mwaungulu said with the program, they have so far digitalized 40 per cent of cases tried since 1998. Mwaungulu said currently, all the high court registries in Zomba, Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu are connected to the system. He added that the public could now easily access legal information, especially on the status of their case, name of the judge as well as time of their court case. “The system is good and the progress is remarkable. We are able to replace much of the hardware and the public are able to access legal information. “In terms of the overall output we are at 40 per cent,” he said Justice Mwaungulu however observed that there was inadequate use of the system by judges and lawyers. “We are very much aware that any system involves a cultural shift and this has not spared the legal fraternity, especially judges and lawyers who try at any cost to avoid the ICT. “The law and practice make it compulsory for supreme and high court to use ICT for case management. As such, in a couple of weeks we will begin intensifying sensitization exercise on the importance of digitized case management system so that they adopt and use it on daily basis,” said Justice Mwaungulu. Microsoft accredited the system and has an alert messaging tool that allows anyone involved in the case process to be alerted either on the phone or on computer for the incoming task anywhere they might be once their gadget is connected to internet, according to the project coordinator.

Mana: Chibuku Product Limited (CPL) has partnered with Mzuzu Prison in promoting irrigation farming through recycling waste water from the brewery to the neighbouring prison’s six-hectare farm. CPL Country Head of Corporate Affairs, Villant Jana, said the company wastes over 60 000 litres of water a day which can be utilized for irrigation. She said the company understands that there is usually shortage of food in the country’s prisons and would like to help in sustainable agriculture so that the inmates are able to feed themselves throughout the year. “We are at planning stage and we are optimistic that it will take shape in the course of this year. They [prison] have a large piece of land which is ideal for irrigation and we will support them to do sustainable farming,” Jana said.
