STATEMENT OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMISSION OF THE AFRICAN UNION ON THE SITUATION IN ETHIOPIA Addis Ababa, 21 February 2018 - The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is closely following the situation in Ethiopia. He recalls, in this respect, that Ethiopia is not only home to the African Union Headquarters, but also an important member of the Union. As such, Ethiopia plays a key role in promoting regional peace and security, as well as in the pursuit of the continental agenda. The Chairperson is confident in the ability of the Ethiopian authorities and people to overcome the challenges at hand and to consolidate the remarkable progress made in the socio-economic development of the country. Last month, he welcomed the steps taken by the Ethiopian authorities to widen the political and democratic space. He is encouraged by the Government’s willingness to persevere on this path. He stresses the need for all concerned stakeholders to display a spirit of responsibility and refrain from any acts likely to undermine peace and stability. These are precious public goods without which neither prosperity nor democracy is conceivable. The Chairperson stresses that the African Union is, as always, at the disposal of its Member States to assist them, whenever necessary and in the manner deemed to be the most appropriate, to address the challenges that necessarily arise in any endeavour to deepen democracy and advance development. The Chairperson looks forward to the strengthening of the steps taken to respond to the concerns expressed by segments of the population in a spirit of dialogue, mutual tolerance and commitment to Ethiopia's best interests that transcend all political and other differences. The stability of Ethiopia is crucial for the well-being of its people, the region and Africa as a whole.

MEDIA ADVISORY Presidential Golf Challenge 2018 Members of the media are invited to the annual Presidential Golf Challenge (PGC) which is hosted as part of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) activities. The purpose of this initiative is to raise funds for charities designated by the sitting President while simultaneously facilitating an opportunity for networking among decision-makers within the private sector and entities from the three spheres of government on the day subsequent to the President’s SONA. The initiative, coordinated by the Ministry for the Public Service and Administration, is a joint effort with the private sector to partake in developmental initiatives to empower society, with this year’s contributions to be made to the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation (CRF). The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation will in turn distribute the proceeds to deserving charities. The CRF was formerly known as the Shanduka Foundation, which was established in 2004 by the Shanduka Group and its founder, President Cyril Ramaphosa. In 2015, the foundation changed its name to Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation and became an independent organisation. Over the past decade of its existence, the Foundation has had a meaningful impact on the economic and social development of South Africa. Together with its partners, it continues to make a tremendous difference in the lives and circumstances of many underprivileged individuals. Through dedication, collaboration and a commitment to creating positive change, the Foundation continue to build on previous achievements to create a South Africa we can all be proud of. The golf event will afford the President an opportunity to continue emphasise the role of business in economic development and growth using education as a tool for sustainable development and economic growth, and to also allow for corporate social investment alignment that seeks to make education for the poor a reality. Attending the golf day will be Cabinet Ministers; Members of Parliament; Members of Executive Councils; Directors-General; Heads of State Owned Enterprises and Executives from the private sector.
