OC HAILS THE MEDIA By Henry Mlelemba, Local Correspondent Outgoing officer in charge for Salima police station who is also Deputy Commissioner for Central region Edward Chingaipe has hailed the media for taking part in crime reduction in the district. He was speaking on the sidelines of an award ceremony which took place at Salima District Council Chamber on Friday 19 January 2017, where the station was commended for reducing crimes in the just ended year. The officer in charge said the media has helped a lot to curb criminals’ cases by reporting and sensitizing people on negative effects of committing different offences. “We really appreciate the commendable job that the media has done in helping us to curb criminal cases here in Salima, therefore, this should be encouraging to all media personnel in the district”. In his remarks, a delegate from central region Police headquarters who is also Chairperson for community policing Reverend Mbewe encouraged Salima Police Station for their big role in curbing criminal cases in the district. “Let me congratulate all the men in uniform for working hand in hand to emerge one of the police station who have done well, so let us all fight hard for the betterment of the country.” Salima Police has managed to score position two in reducing crimes in the just ended year and they were given award to motivate them.

DEPUTY PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA HAS ARRIVED IN SWITZERLAND, DAVOS TO LEAD THE SOUTH AFRICAN DELEGATION AT THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM 2018 Davos - The Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa today arrived in Davos, Switzerland to lead, a high-level government, business and labour delegation to the 2018 World Economic Forum Annual meeting scheduled from 23-26 January 2018. This year’s event is held under the theme, “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World”. Deputy President Ramaphosa will join various discussion platforms in Davos with an aim to develop a response to new strategies towards transforming governance in various parts of the world. South Africa last week announced a number of measures to strengthen governance and management of its State Owned Enterprises. This is part of an ongoing broader effort to restore confidence in the economy. The South African government will continue to act decisively to address challenges at its key state owned enterprises to restore public and investor confidence and to ensure that they fulfil their economic and developmental mandates. The WEF Davos forum presents South Africa with a platform to showcase its attractiveness as an investment destination and trade partner; set out plans that are unfolding to secure improved and inclusive economic growth, and contribute to efforts to respond to societal challenges globally. Celebs, Tay Grin, Amnong’a, Kabichi, inspire Mangochi youth By Kondwani Magombo Mangochi, January 22, Mana: Celebrated Malawi music artist, Tay Grin, and soccer stars, Fischer ‘Anong’a’ Kondowe, Henry ‘Magetsi’ Kabichi, and George Nyirenda over the weekend inspired the youth of Mangochi during a HeForShe campaign. The event was held at Nampiguja Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Bwananyambi. It was organized by UN Women as part of the organization’s activities in promoting girl child education and gender equality in the districts of Dedza, Salima and Mangochi. The celebrities encouraged the youth to set realistic goals and work hard towards achieving the same even when challenges seem to be too hard to overcome. “Each and every one of you has different talents instilled in you and I’d like to encourage you to discover that talent and work hard to perfect it,” said Nyasa Big Bullets soccer star, George Nyirenda in his address to hundreds of youths who patronized the event. Nyirenda also urged parents to begin to treat both boys and girls equally in their families and give them all the support they need to claim their rightful space in society. The soccer star said it was very disheartening to note that sometime parents tend to value male children more than their female children in most aspects of life such as education. In an interview with journalists, Fischer ‘Anong’a’ Kondowe singled out poverty as the main reason many girls always fail to go further with their education. Kondowe concurred with Nyirenda that “success comes at a cost” and he urged the youth to face challenges head-on if they are to make strides in life. “Apart from poverty, I’d add peer pressure as one of the social problems among the youth making them fail to continue with their education in Malawi and Africa as a whole,” noted Fischer. He added: “I’m saying this from experience; sometimes the people one chooses to be associated with may lead to one’s success or one’s downfall. “I’d like to strongly appeal to the youth not to get carried away easily; choose friends who can help achieve your set goals.” Coordinator for the HeForShe Movement for UN Women in Malawi, Habiba Osman expressed satisfaction that the campaign is paying dividends in Mangochi. Osman said so far they had managed to mobilize male champions at all levels such as chiefs, religious leaders, parliamentarians and celebrities to join the campaign. “Mangochi is among the districts where our baseline survey indicated that there was high rate of school dropout due to early pregnancies and teen-marriages,” explained Osman adding that the project also takes on board boys because leaving them out was not helping to solve the problem. Osman added that the HeForShe Movement was, therefore, designed to bring together boys and girls to achieve the much needed equality and girl child empowerment. The event was spiced up by various activities among them, football and netball where four schools around Nampiguja Primary competed for HeForShe trophy. Tay Grin took the event to a higher tempo to consolidate all the HeForShe messages by dishing out what the self-acclaimed ‘Nyau King’ is well known for in music circles.

You’ve got a lot of new tools in your arsenal that I hope you can use to improve your creative, professional, and educational writing. To conclude this course, here are some tips and tricks to up your writing game. Accept and appreciate criticism. Everyone needs an editor. Whether you use a professional editor at work or your mom, always be willing to let others read your work and offer feedback. Negative criticism may sting at first, but it will ultimately make you a better writer. Write quickly; edit slowly. When you’re in the zone, stay there. Write as long as the words flow through you. Don’t stop because you think there’s a comma splice in the third paragraph. After you get your first draft on paper, then slowly go back through and check for correct grammar. Have a writing routine. Some people journal before bed. Some columnists write the first draft of their column before they open their email in the morning. Find the best time in the day for you to write and make it a daily habit to stick to writing at this appointed time. Always keep a notebook handy. You never know when inspiration hits. Maybe you’ll see a phrase in a magazine ad that fits perfectly in the op/ed you’re working on. Maybe you’ll get a brilliant idea for a short story while you’re on the bus. Maybe you’ll hear a talk show host simplify a difficult concept. Wherever new knowledge or inspiration strike, keep a journal or notebook ready for such situations. Disconnect the distractions. How many times have you started a project, thought, “Let me check social media for 2 seconds…” and 3 hours later you’re still scrolling and no closer to the end of your project? Disengage from the internet and your phone and put your focus and energy into your writing. Kill your darlings. This is a hard one. You’ve written an article and it’s wonderful, but it’s too long. There’s a paragraph halfway through that is magnificently written, but it doesn’t really fit with the overall message of the article. It takes something away from the rest of the article. Silently weep, then hold down the backspace key until the paragraph is gone. Show, don’t tell. Which is a more interesting thing to read? (1) Horace was angry at his driver. (2) The color in Horace’s face changed from pale to red; his eyes bulged as he clenched his fists and started to scream at his driver. They both get the point across, but sentence (2) does a better job. Trust your reader to figure out what happens when you describe a scene rather than spelling everything out. Leave excuses at the door. Helen Keller was blind and deaf and she wrote prolifically. You literally have no excuse.

Press Statement Panos concerned with threats to ban Facebook in Zambia Lusaka, 19 January 2018: Panos Institute Southern Africa is greatly worried by recent reports attributed to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Hon. Brian Mushimba, indicating that the Zambian government would consider restricting access to some social media platforms like Facebook. Panos views this threat as an affront to the country’s democracy and development. It is our considered view as an organisation that any restriction on social media would amount to infringement of Zambian citizens’ right to freedom of expression. It will limit the participation of Zambians in the global village, and curtail the growth of ICT based businesses. There is no doubt that social media platforms are an important alternative source of information for the citizens. We have also seen many cases where citizens have meaningfully engaged with government through social media. We appeal to Hon. Mushimba, and the government at large, not to take the route of banning social media sites like Facebook. Instead, the government needs to work with other stakeholders to support Zambians to use social media for communication that shapes the country’s development. We also advise the government to find alternative ways of curbing fake news without restricting social media or infringing on citizens’ rights.
