SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR PEACEFUL PROTESTS

Government has noted the planned marches set to take place on Friday, 7 April 2017 and reiterates that it is a normal working day. 

The planned march and delivery of a memoranda to the Union Buildings, which is a national key point requires that prior written permission is obtained from the Presidency in accordance with the Regulation of Gatherings Act, 1993. 

Government wishes to confirm that no such request was received by the Director General in the Presidency.

 

The Constitution, which is the cornerstone of our democracy, makes provision for the public to raise concerns in various platforms including marches. However, whilst it is within their Constitutional rights to embark on mass actions, such protests must be done within the confines of the law.  

Though our Constitution, in the Bill of Rights, provides for this important right, Section 36 of the Constitution equally enjoins protestors to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.

 

Those who are planning to participate in marches must do so within the designated routes in a peaceful manner. 

They should refrain from any form of intimidation and destruction of property. Marchers should avoid making inflammatory statements or provocative actions that could incite violence. Conveners of the march should together with their marshals cooperate with the law enforcement agencies who will be deployed to serve and protect all citizens and property.

 

During the course of the day, government will periodically update citizens on the progress of the protests, to allow South Africans not participating in the marches to go about their work freely, paying particular attention to operating businesses and informal traders.

 

Government has a responsibility to protect property and to protect those who do not wish to participate in protests or strikes against intimidation or threats of violence. We call on communities, groups or individuals to raise issues responsibly and in the spirit of nation building.

 

Government remains committed to implementing the programs and projects that will continue to improve the lives of South Africans.  The National Development Plan remains a living document that will ensure that we remain on course to tackle unemployment, poverty and inequalities within our society.

 

We remain a caring and open government and we encourage dialogue and engagement to resolve any issue through appropriate platforms. Government thanks civil society, labour and businesses who have already mobilized people to maintain normalcy, to deepen our Constitutional order and to underline peaceful protests as an essential part of our democracy. 

This important right to freedom of speech will not be taken away by this government, which fought to make real the peoples aspirations enshrined in our Constitution.

Wanted: Social Entrepreneurship Journalist

The Social Entrepreneurship Journalist is a Frontline Media project which aims at fostering entrepreneurship as a viable career option with the high levels of unemployment or difficult employment situations leaving little room for individuals with high ambitions.

Our initiative focuses on analyzing economic, political and socio-cultural conditions as well as conceptualizing and implementing sustainable public policy programs to foster entrepreneurship.

We’ll be closely partnering with governments, universities and highly influential individuals around Malawi to deliver customized and unique solutions that resolve the most significant issues of strategic importance as far as entrepreneurship is concerned.

The Job

In order to supplement our team, we are looking for volunteers for the position of Social Entrepre­neurship Journalist. The goal of this activity is to perform interviews (written, podcasts, videos and any other format which makes sense) with selected successful social entrepreneurs all around the country, with a focus on all the 28 districts. We want to publish weekly stories/interviews and you would have the full responsibility for this report.

New Head of SADC Secretariat Public Relations Unit (PRU):

Ms Barbara Lopi has been appointed Senior Officer – Public Relations for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), effective February 2017. 

Previously, Ms. Lopi worked as Communications and Awareness Expert for Water in the Directorate on Infrastructure and Services within the SADC Secretariat from October 2012.

Ms Lopi has worked in the Awareness, Communications, Media and Public Relations fields as a Journalist, Researcher/writer, Editor and Project Manager for several organisations including the United Nations Office for Projects Support, German Development Cooperation, Southern African Research and Documentations Centre, Care International-Zambia, Zambia Association for Research and Development and the Inter Africa Network for Human Rights.

RABASOTHO COMMUNITY CENTRE NOT SCHEDULED FOR PAYMENT

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini has noted the claims by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on beneficiaries who allegedly did not get their social grants at the Rabasotho Community Centre in Tembisa.

The Minister would like to state that the Rabasotho Community Centre was not scheduled for payment today. It is scheduled for payment from April 4 - 7 2017 and beneficiaries were given slips last month that clearly state dates and venues. The DA should have simply asked people for these slips or contacted the call centre for assistance as was widely communicated. 

"Members of Parliament, especially if they are members of the portfolio committee on Social Development, have a duty to give information and educate South Africans. If the members of the DA had the best interest of South Africans at heart, they should have at least tried to find the correct information for the supposed stranded beneficiaries. It looks like the DA cannot believe that indeed social grants were paid, they even abandoned the values of ubuntu - caring, compassion, respect, dignity," said Minister Dlamini.

It is clear that the DA is operating in desperation and we appeal to social grant recipients to go to their respective dates and venues as they appear on their slips given last month. Social grants are paid over 15 days beginning on the first day of each month and payment will continue until April 17 in the Gauteng Province.  Social grants are paid through various channels including merchants, banks, points of sale, ATMs and SASSA cash paypoints. 

We take the opportunity to remind beneficiaries who have any challenges with the grants to call the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11  toll-free to get assistance.

By the end of April 1, SASSA had disbursed over R3,3 billion. On deductions: The Minister is committed to following the ConCourt order to the latter.

The Embassy of Belgium and Freedom Park Launch World War 1 Exhibition “The Great War in Broad Outlines”

Media is hereby invited to attend a media briefing on the World War 1 (WW1) Exhibition,  entitled ‘The Great War in Broad Outlines”, to be held at Freedom Park on Thursday 6th April 2017 at 09h00.  The media briefing precedes the official launch taking place in the evening at Freedom Park. The briefing will also unpack elements of the forthcoming Seminar to be held on 7 April 2017.

Attending the press briefing will be amongst others, H.E.
